Furniture Elements For Smaller Bedrooms

A Study of Furniture Elements For Smaller Bedrooms

Furniture is the most important element in a bedroom. Let’s explore some creative ways to make use of our everyday furniture.

When we enter any bedroom the first thing we notice is the furniture. All humans always see interiors and all decorating ideas that are executed in “elevation”. This means we always see the face of the furniture.

Every object in the bedroom large or small has a direct relation to dimensions of the human body. This relation with our body decides the comfort level in a bedroom. If a double bed is oversized, it will naturally occupy more floor space by reducing the volume of empty space. That’s why proportions of every furniture piece are vital to maintaining comfort levels.

Let’s examine some important factors about bedroom furniture

1) Furniture – Double Bed

This piece of furniture occupies the maximum amount of floor space. A typical double bed measures about 1800mmX1800mmX450mm height. Of course, this is a comfortably sized bed but can vary depending upon the requirements at the interior site.

Double beds come in steel/wrought iron/wooden frames. The most important point to note here is that 80% of the structural framework gets covered by linen. The mattress, bed sheets, pillows cover most of the part that supports the load of the users. That’s why the real beauty of a double bed lies in the linen used. Linen defines the shape of a double bed to some extent.

The patterns and decorations used on the linen also ads to the overall design theme of the bedroom. The headboard of the double bed (the part of the double bed which stands behind the head when we lie down on the bed) is a prominent feature and can be used effectively by using semi-circular shapes.

One creative use of the headboard is that we can add artificial lighting in it by providing blur glass and the effect of indirect lighting can be created. This is helpful if the master wants to read a book or magazine by relaxing in the bed itself.

Most of the time we see that the space below the mattress is used for storing linen. This is done in the form of sliding drawers which slide out from sides.

I have seen one more creative way of supporting the platform where the master lies down. By giving an angular slant to the supporting structure of the bed we can save valuable circulation space in a small bedroom.

2) Furniture – Wardrobe

A wardrobe is another element in a bedroom that creates a significant impact on the entire interior design theme. We always see a wardrobe in elevation. A typical wardrobe is most of the times measures 2100mm in height. The length and depth of the wardrobe differ from location to location but
is typically around 1200mm in length and 600mm in depth for a single person’s wardrobe.

The internal compartments of a wardrobe are divided keeping in mind the various styles and sizes of clothes we wear. The internal design of a wardrobe also depends upon regional influences. For example in Japan, women wear a typical kind of dress or in Indian, most women wear a dress code called as “Saree” which needs much more space similar to trousers.

Depending upon the requirements a wardrobe might also include a small “money safe” with locking arrangements, drawers for keeping smaller sized clothes such as under-garments.

3) Furniture – Dressing Table

A dressing table is a place to be happy about. This is the place where we spend a lot of time shaping our faces. A small bedroom may not have enough space for a dressing table. At such times the outer faces of the wardrobe can be used to fix a full height mirror. This also creates a reflection of the rest of the room it and thus creates an illusion of more space.

A wardrobe needs special spotlight arrangements to throw light spot on the person in front of the mirror. This will include a flat mirror and small storage spaces for the makeup-kits, perfumes, etc…

In a case where the mirror is fixed on the outer surface of the wardrobe shutter,(as mentioned above) the storage space for the make-up kit can be arranged inside the wardrobe.

4) Furniture -Study Table

A study table is just a place to do some important daily tasks Sometimes it is useful to keep a computer on it. This study table can be designed to include an elevated storage space for books/files.

This combination of a study table and a bookshelf is a great way to save space in small bedrooms. If the table top in not occupied by a computer or other objects, it can be made to fold and thus increasing more floor area.

This was a very basic study of the most commonly used furniture items in a bedroom. There are hundreds of creative ways to improve the performance and efficiency of furniture items in interior design. This article was just a starting point to trigger the creative genius in you.

Home Decor Quick Make-Over Tips

Home Decor

Home Decor

If your home decor is beginning to look a little frazzled, then here are seven tips to give your room a quick make-over without breaking the family budget. Not all home decorating projects have to mean knocking down walls and hiring a contractor. You can easily accomplish these seven tips over a few days and bring a lifeless, dull room back to life.

Home Decor Tip #1 – CLEAN:

If you have a family, then you probably have newspapers, magazines, books, toys, shoes, clothes, etc., that detract from the personality of your room. Find or create new storage spaces for these items. Give your draperies and upholstered furnishings a good vacuuming. Remove all your decorative collectibles and give each piece a thorough cleaning. You want the space to have a fresh beginning.

Home Decor Tip #2 – FOCAL POINT:

If your room is lacking a focal point, try painting one wall in a different, but coordinating color, that complements the rest of your room and furnishings. The newly painted wall will instantly become the focal point of the room. Decorate the wall with interesting artwork or a large ornately framed mirror. (If you opt to use a mirror, make sure it reflects a pleasant view never a blank wall or closet door). Place a favorite piece of furniture against the new focal point wall to complete the look. If your room already has a nice focal point, consider giving the entire room a fresh new coat of paint. A simple color change can make an incredible difference in your room.

Home Decor Tip #3 – REARRANGE THE FURNITURE:

No matter the size of your room, pull the furniture away from the walls. Place your furnishings at interesting angles in front of your focal point to create an intimate conversation area. If you room is narrow, try placing the sofa on the diagonal to make the room appear wider. Never arrange your room so that the traffic flow runs directly through your conversational area.

Home Decor Tip #4 – REARRANGE THE RUG:

If you have an area rug, turn it on an angle and use it to define your newly arranged conversation area. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, try layering a complimentary area rug in your conversation area. (Use carpet-to-carpet tape to anchor the area rug. This helps keep the area rug in place, and, more importantly, helps prevent someone from tripping over the edges of the rug).

Home Decor Tip #5 – ADD GREENERY:

Breathe new life into your room with the addition of healthy green plants. Use plants of varying heights and species for interest. Keep your plants in good health and well-trimmed. (A vase of fresh cut flowers is always a beautiful addition to any room). If you have poor lighting, consider using good quality silk greenery. Silk greenery is actually a safer choice if you have small children or pets.

Home Decor Tip #6 – BUY SOME NEW LAMPS:

Nothing can make your room look more outdated and stale than lamps from the sixties. Find unique, interesting lamps that will make a bold statement and relate to the personality of your room. Look for lighting with three-way switches. This offers you a variety of lighting options to set the mood in your room.

Home Decor Tip #7 – ADD PERSONALITY AND ACCESSORIES:

Refresh your favorite family photographs by treating them to a new frame. Hang interesting artwork, mirrors or architectural pieces that reflect your personality. Give new life to your sofa and chairs with decorative pillows and throws. This is an easy way to add color and texture to your room. Create vignettes with your freshly cleaned collectibles. Group them in odd numbers at varying heights. Use hardbound books in stacks, or assorted decorative boxes, to assist with varying the heights. Bring in some candlelight to add drama and warmth. Last, but not least, add something unexpected just for fun.

With a little bit of imagination and creativity, you can turn your frazzled home decor into a fresh, exciting new space. Renew your passion for decorating your home one room at a time!

Interior Design Elements

Interior Design

Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or starting from scratch with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of interior design include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.

Interior Design Element #1: Space

Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively.

Interior Design Element #2: Line

The lines in a room are second only to color in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is straight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasizing the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create.
Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture.
Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms.
Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals.
Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine.

Interior Design Element #3: Form

Lines that join together produce the form, or shape, of an object, which in turn impacts the overall feeling of a room. Straight lines create rectangles, squares, and triangles. Curved lines form circles and ovals. The rectangle is the most popular form and is often the dominant shape in a room. Triangles provide stability and curved shapes soften the contours of objects.

Interior Design Element #4: Color

More than any other element, color can make a room beautiful. Color can set the mood. It can make a room warmer or cooler, larger or smaller. It can hide unsightly features or call attention to the center of interest. Even with the simplest furnishings, the proper use of color can transform a room.

Interior Design Element #5: Texture

Texture is playing an increasingly important role in home decorating. Visual texture is a materials apparent smoothness or roughness. To maintain and enhance a casual feeling, use fabrics that are more heavily textured, nubby or rough visual texture. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as silk, moir, chintz and silk-like looks support a more formal feeling in a room. Using several levels of complementary textures adds variety and maintains interest. However, it is a good idea to avoid dramatic contrasts in texture.

Decorating Tips

Simple Upscale Decorating Tips

Decorating has changed dramatically in recent years. Many years ago people put great amounts of money in art and accent pieces. That’s still an option art and collectibles can be great ways to express yourself. If you find a piece of art that you truly love, go for it! Art is a great way to have moving pieces that speak directly to your soul. Top art can also be a great investment.

On the other hand, today many top designers and artists work for mass department stores and offer their collections for a small fraction of the cost of their work. Top artists and designers do this because their profit is greater when selling to many people rather than just a few. Everyone benefits from this system. We can all enjoy trendy, top art for a fraction of the cost and designers or artists are better compensated for their work. This system also allows us to update homes as often as we wish.

Updating a home has never been easier. Simply go down to a store, choose a collection you like and bring it home. The collections are often set up in the store, so that dishes, glassware, tablecloths, napkins, and accent pieces are displayed in a professionally designed grouping. World-renowned designers put the collections together and freely give us the advantage of their talent, training, and expertise. All types of stores employ top professionals to design collections, so that price isn’t necessarily a determiner of quality.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that too many choices may lead to confusion and a sense of feeling overwhelmed. Each collection is beautiful and easily available. The cost per item is low, but choosing pieces can be a confusing and sometimes expensive dilemma. How do you determine what to do?

The first thing to do is determine what you have and what you need. There is a saying Less is more. This is especially true in home decorating. Its far better to have a few pieces that you love than to have too many things that you don’t particularly like, no matter how good a buy they were.

Accents come in any budget, so first make sure that you have good, comfortable furniture.

More Decorating Tips

Secondary colors make a big difference in a home. Whats the main color in the room? If your couch is red, for instance, a white accent throughout the room will look dramatically different than, say, a purple accent. Six months later, change the accent pieces to black and the room will again look strikingly different, all the time using the same furniture. Red, or any bright color, can sometimes cause a challenge when trying to find the right accents. Neutral colors in furniture will give you more options for accent color changes, and allow you more flexibility.

Many people wonder what colors go together the answer is that if you like it, it works. It’s your home. If you’re unsure of your choices, one option is to go to a paint store and get the sample cards. They’re put together by professionals and show which colors work together. Simply match the colors on the card and you’re unlikely to go wrong.

Another easy way of ensuring tasteful color coordination is to simply purchase an entire collection. If you want to update the bathroom it’s easy to get all the accent pieces and fabrics at one time. Unless you’re sure of what you’re doing, this is a very simple way to get a beautiful, professional look. Make sure you purchase all the pieces that you’ll need because often the collections are changed every few months and pieces won’t be available.

Decorating can be a real challenge. These are some easy tips to have a designer look at a fraction of the cost. You’ll end up with a home you’ll love!
