A Study of Furniture Elements For Smaller Bedrooms
Furniture is the most important element in a bedroom. Let’s explore some creative ways to make use of our everyday furniture.
When we enter any bedroom the first thing we notice is the furniture. All humans always see interiors and all decorating ideas that are executed in “elevation”. This means we always see the face of the furniture.
Every object in the bedroom large or small has a direct relation to dimensions of the human body. This relation with our body decides the comfort level in a bedroom. If a double bed is oversized, it will naturally occupy more floor space by reducing the volume of empty space. That’s why proportions of every furniture piece are vital to maintaining comfort levels.
Let’s examine some important factors about bedroom furniture
1) Furniture – Double Bed
This piece of furniture occupies the maximum amount of floor space. A typical double bed measures about 1800mmX1800mmX450mm height. Of course, this is a comfortably sized bed but can vary depending upon the requirements at the interior site.
Double beds come in steel/wrought iron/wooden frames. The most important point to note here is that 80% of the structural framework gets covered by linen. The mattress, bed sheets, pillows cover most of the part that supports the load of the users. That’s why the real beauty of a double bed lies in the linen used. Linen defines the shape of a double bed to some extent.
The patterns and decorations used on the linen also ads to the overall design theme of the bedroom. The headboard of the double bed (the part of the double bed which stands behind the head when we lie down on the bed) is a prominent feature and can be used effectively by using semi-circular shapes.
One creative use of the headboard is that we can add artificial lighting in it by providing blur glass and the effect of indirect lighting can be created. This is helpful if the master wants to read a book or magazine by relaxing in the bed itself.
Most of the time we see that the space below the mattress is used for storing linen. This is done in the form of sliding drawers which slide out from sides.
I have seen one more creative way of supporting the platform where the master lies down. By giving an angular slant to the supporting structure of the bed we can save valuable circulation space in a small bedroom.
2) Furniture – Wardrobe
A wardrobe is another element in a bedroom that creates a significant impact on the entire interior design theme. We always see a wardrobe in elevation. A typical wardrobe is most of the times measures 2100mm in height. The length and depth of the wardrobe differ from location to location but
is typically around 1200mm in length and 600mm in depth for a single person’s wardrobe.
The internal compartments of a wardrobe are divided keeping in mind the various styles and sizes of clothes we wear. The internal design of a wardrobe also depends upon regional influences. For example in Japan, women wear a typical kind of dress or in Indian, most women wear a dress code called as “Saree” which needs much more space similar to trousers.
Depending upon the requirements a wardrobe might also include a small “money safe” with locking arrangements, drawers for keeping smaller sized clothes such as under-garments.
3) Furniture – Dressing Table
A dressing table is a place to be happy about. This is the place where we spend a lot of time shaping our faces. A small bedroom may not have enough space for a dressing table. At such times the outer faces of the wardrobe can be used to fix a full height mirror. This also creates a reflection of the rest of the room it and thus creates an illusion of more space.
A wardrobe needs special spotlight arrangements to throw light spot on the person in front of the mirror. This will include a flat mirror and small storage spaces for the makeup-kits, perfumes, etc…
In a case where the mirror is fixed on the outer surface of the wardrobe shutter,(as mentioned above) the storage space for the make-up kit can be arranged inside the wardrobe.
4) Furniture -Study Table
A study table is just a place to do some important daily tasks Sometimes it is useful to keep a computer on it. This study table can be designed to include an elevated storage space for books/files.
This combination of a study table and a bookshelf is a great way to save space in small bedrooms. If the table top in not occupied by a computer or other objects, it can be made to fold and thus increasing more floor area.
This was a very basic study of the most commonly used furniture items in a bedroom. There are hundreds of creative ways to improve the performance and efficiency of furniture items in interior design. This article was just a starting point to trigger the creative genius in you.
Turn An Empty Nest Into A Dream Room
Empty nest syndrome can be quite depressing for parents who have kids going off to school for the first time. But melancholy moms and dads can now rejoice. When your child leaves for college, you can renovate his/her room and turn it into your own private sanctuary or workshop.
It’s not as drastic as it sounds. No, you won’t actually kick them out of their room permanently, but you will free up a good deal of space to use while your children are away.
Before you begin, discuss your plans with your children. Ask them what they want to keep. Obviously, their bed will need to stay for when they are home on weekends and holidays. A chest of drawers will most likely also stay for storing some of their clothes. But use this time as a sort of spring-cleaning to get rid of meaningless junk that has accumulated in closets or under beds over the last 18 years. Allow your child to keep whatever s/he feels important and then donate the rest to charity, if possible.
Now comes the fun part… to make a room of your own. Where a desk used to be, a new sewing table can be placed. Where the Game Boy and DVD were stored can now become a mini-library. The beanbag chair can be replaced with a comfortable wing chair. The possibilities are endless.
Dream Room – Office
If you want a home office, look into self-contained office units like those sold here at Southern Charm Furniture. They can lend a great deal of flexibility without taking up a lot of floor space, and options are endless for any budget.
Colors are often one of the touchy points. What decorations go on the walls is another. Here, it is important to come to an agreement with your post-teen. You will see, after freshman year, that the attachment to the old posters will fade. Maybe you can each choose walls and decorate them in the ways that you like. Just position your writing desk or sewing machine so that your back is toward the walls your child has decorated.
With a little work and some creativity, you can make good use of the otherwise empty space left behind by college-bound kids. Then you can immerse yourself in your newfound playroom – and freedom – to help lift your spirits.
This entertainment wall system provides a simple design with emphasis on an attractive finish featuring a casual gray color with subtle distressing and can house your media components and accessories making your house feel like a home.
A rustic European vibe present in the weathered charcoal finish and Continental inspired details adds appeal and interest to the Sutton Place home office. Felt lined top drawers, side mount ball bearing guides, English and French dovetailed drawer construction and the highest quality construction standard to Magnussen Home. The collection features a variety of desk options with plenty of storage.
Simple Upscale Decorating Tips
Decorating has changed dramatically in recent years. Many years ago people put great amounts of money in art and accent pieces. That’s still an option art and collectibles can be great ways to express yourself. If you find a piece of art that you truly love, go for it! Art is a great way to have moving pieces that speak directly to your soul. Top art can also be a great investment.
On the other hand, today many top designers and artists work for mass department stores and offer their collections for a small fraction of the cost of their work. Top artists and designers do this because their profit is greater when selling to many people rather than just a few. Everyone benefits from this system. We can all enjoy trendy, top art for a fraction of the cost and designers or artists are better compensated for their work. This system also allows us to update homes as often as we wish.
Updating a home has never been easier. Simply go down to a store, choose a collection you like and bring it home. The collections are often set up in the store, so that dishes, glassware, tablecloths, napkins, and accent pieces are displayed in a professionally designed grouping. World-renowned designers put the collections together and freely give us the advantage of their talent, training, and expertise. All types of stores employ top professionals to design collections, so that price isn’t necessarily a determiner of quality.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that too many choices may lead to confusion and a sense of feeling overwhelmed. Each collection is beautiful and easily available. The cost per item is low, but choosing pieces can be a confusing and sometimes expensive dilemma. How do you determine what to do?
The first thing to do is determine what you have and what you need. There is a saying Less is more. This is especially true in home decorating. Its far better to have a few pieces that you love than to have too many things that you don’t particularly like, no matter how good a buy they were.
Accents come in any budget, so first make sure that you have good, comfortable furniture.
More Decorating Tips
Secondary colors make a big difference in a home. Whats the main color in the room? If your couch is red, for instance, a white accent throughout the room will look dramatically different than, say, a purple accent. Six months later, change the accent pieces to black and the room will again look strikingly different, all the time using the same furniture. Red, or any bright color, can sometimes cause a challenge when trying to find the right accents. Neutral colors in furniture will give you more options for accent color changes, and allow you more flexibility.
Many people wonder what colors go together the answer is that if you like it, it works. It’s your home. If you’re unsure of your choices, one option is to go to a paint store and get the sample cards. They’re put together by professionals and show which colors work together. Simply match the colors on the card and you’re unlikely to go wrong.
Another easy way of ensuring tasteful color coordination is to simply purchase an entire collection. If you want to update the bathroom it’s easy to get all the accent pieces and fabrics at one time. Unless you’re sure of what you’re doing, this is a very simple way to get a beautiful, professional look. Make sure you purchase all the pieces that you’ll need because often the collections are changed every few months and pieces won’t be available.
Decorating can be a real challenge. These are some easy tips to have a designer look at a fraction of the cost. You’ll end up with a home you’ll love!
Buying New Furniture – When Is It Time?
Are your sofa or chair cushions showing signs of wear? If its leather, maybe the seat cushions are discolored, lighter in the seat area than the rest of the sofa or chair. If its fabric, see if the upholstery threads are pulling apart or discolored. If your furniture is showing signs of wearing, its time to consider new furniture or at least slip covering options.
Are there holes in your furniture? You might be able to stitch or patch the holes if the rest of the piece is structurally sound. Otherwise, start thinking about new furniture.
When you rise from the seat, does the cushion remain sunken? Check the springs to see if that’s the problem. If a broken or stretched spring is the culprit, the problem can probably be repaired, maybe even by yourself if you happen to be handy in that way. If the springs look okay, maybe you just need a new cushion. Take a cushion with you to an upholstery shop or fabric store to show the salesperson what kind of cushion you need to replace the bad one. It’s a good idea to take a good cushion with you so the salesperson can help match the cushion to the firmness and density you want to replace the bad cushion with.
Is the frame of your furniture still in good shape? If a sofa or chair has been dropped, it might crack a wooden frame. Flip your furniture upside down and take a look.
Does your furniture sit level? If its not level, check the frame. Check the legs to make sure a peg is not missing. If you cant spot the problem, its time to buy new furniture.
When you sit on your furniture, do you feel the arms separate from the rest of the frame? Maybe you have a problem that can be solved with wood glue and a few clamps. Otherwise, for safety’s sake, get rid of your old furniture.
When you sit down, do you feel wood or a frame sticking out? Consider that poke in the behind your official cue to be buying new furniture!
If you know its time to replace the old look of your furniture, decide if the update can be done with a simple slipcover. By measuring the furniture properly, a slipcover either purchased ready made or custom made if your furniture has an unusual shape or curve to it you can get a nice fit. Slipcovers range in price starting at about $40. The better fabric you select, the higher the price. If you just want to update your furniture for a few more months until you save enough money to buy an all-new ensemble, slipcovers are the way to go.
Buying New Furniture
Look at the finances. Will buying new furniture mean you’ll have to finance the purchase? If so, can you handle the extra bill each month?
Do you just want to? There’s nothing wrong with wanting new furniture. Look for solid pieces that will give your family many years of enjoyment and you’ll always be happy with your decision on buying new furniture!
